Intentional cold-water immersion is a growing practice for those seeking its claimed therapeutic benefits. At the same time unintentional cold-water immersion (CWI), and the cold shock response, account for at least 50 - 60 lives in Aotearoa New Zealand annually.
Geoff Ockwell will introduce the physiology and human impacts of the cold shock response. He will draw on both his experience of providing controlled CWI sessions for secondary and tertiary students, and the research of professors Mike Tipton and Jim Cotter.
And we will briefly explore the research related to CWI's therapeutic benefits.
