The Auckland International Campus Construction Team was pleased to host a guest session on Dispute Resolution delivered by Michael Jamieson, a representative from the Building Disputes Tribunal (BDT).
The session provided valuable insight into how disputes arising in construction and commercial projects are resolved efficiently and fairly in practice.
The speaker shared an overview of BDT’s specialist role and explained the different dispute resolution pathways available in the industry. Students gained a clearer understanding of how formal and informal mechanisms operate and when each method is most appropriate.
Key areas covered included the role of adjudication in achieving timely project outcomes, the differences between mediation and arbitration, and the importance of well-drafted dispute resolution clauses in construction contracts. Practical examples helped link theory to real-world application and encouraged thoughtful discussion during the session.
We thank BDT for sharing their expertise and for supporting industry-engaged learning. Sessions like these play an important role in preparing our students to manage disputes professionally and confidently in their future careers.
