Abstract

This Advanced Negotiated Work-Based Learning Project was borne out of a presentation to the Board of Otago Polytechnic Auckland International Campus, 30 September 2020. I stated that sustainability is our competitive advantage, and our four Strategic Objectives for Sustainable Practice could be leveraged as a point of difference and opportunity in a competitive higher education market. A Sustainability Strategy was sought; sustainability initiatives were immediately activated, refined, and grown to inculcate a culture of sustainability, embedded in all that we do. This professional practice thesis follows that journey, mainly from the end of 2021 to mid-2022, using critical discussion of relevant theories and concepts to reveal insights into practice via pragmatic action research. Reflexive commentary appraises work-based learning inquiry, via initiatives undertaken in this project; reflective critical self-evaluation and insights unpack motivations and aspirations leading to development of my professional identity. The project has amplified contribution to leadership on campus and in our sector and stimulated transformative practice for productive improvement on campus. The report tells the story of transformational change, to a culture that develops sustainable practitioners, towards a culture of sustainability beyond our campus.
